GENERAL CONTEXT
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization, that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

The MSF movement is built around five operational directorates supported by 24 sections and offices worldwide. MSF OCBA is one of those directorates. MSF Portugal is one of the MSF offices spread across Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe, bringing together expertise, financial resources and personnel for field projects.
JOB GENERAL OBJECTIVE
MSF Portugal communication activities aim to develop the quality, reliability and impact of MSF engagement with its audiences – in Portugal, and in the world with a special focus on Portuguese-speaking countries.
Reporting to the Social Media and Campaigns Manager of MSF Portugal, within the Communications Unit, this position is responsible for producing, adapting and implementing content in social media – with special focus on audiovisual output – about MSF’s public communication, activities, events and initiatives, to promote the profile of MSF and raise awareness of MSF humanitarian work.
The Social Media Officer contributes to the alignment of MSF language and external communication with diverse audiences to give visibility to the crises in which the medical humanitarian organization works, and brings innovation to MSF Portugal editorial approach and content diversity, aiming to enhance engagement with audiences.
A key area of focus for this position will be the launch and strategic development of MSF Portugal’s presence on TikTok Pro, as part of a broader effort to diversify digital engagement channels. The role will also contribute to the pilot implementation of the Sunshine referral programme – an initiative aimed at strengthening audience engagement and broadening outreach by offering new, in-app mechanisms for individuals to support humanitarian action and amplify MSF’s social mission.
MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES, FUNCTIONS AND TASKS
- Create, edit and publish content on MSF Portugal social media channels, ensuring content that not only supports MSF’s communication objectives and is in line with our style guide and DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) principles, but also optimised for the audience and distribution.
- Work closely with the communication lines of MSF Portugal to produce new social media content, ensuring the quality by editing or adapting content as necessary.
- Deliver regular and high quality social media output and initiatives, with special focus on audiovisual content, in support of MSF Portugal’s communication, campaigns, public engagement and advocacy objectives.
- Develop, edit and publish videos on TikTok, building up scripts and recording footage of themselves or with other MSF staff, and adapting images from MSF projects.
- Develop digital creative products and content to further MSF’s communications requirements.
- Work in an agile manner to identify opportunities, inserting MSF into social media conversations where relevant to our work and objectives.
- Develop social media interactions with audiences, ensuring MSF’s values and reputation are upheld.
- Work with the communications team to provide online resources and social media support for campaigns and public engagement events.
- Support to identify and establish relationships with social media influencers suitable to MSF’s principles as part of a larger influencer mapping strategy.
- Provide regular updates on social media activities and outputs and online content performance as part of a wider reporting structure.
- Support gathering data to measure and inform the constant improvement of MSF Portugal’s social media presence.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Education, experience and competencies
- Degree in Communication Sciences (Journalism, Communication, Advertising, Multimedia and/or Public Relations) and a minimum of two years of experience in the relevant areas/sectors.
- Excellent spoken and written Portuguese with outstanding grasp of grammar, writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Proficiency in English (essential) and Spanish (desirable).
- Evidence of utilising social media platforms successfully to achieve campaigning or communications objectives.
- Good knowledge of TikTok trends and online content production experience, with storytelling and videography skills and knowledge of audiovisual editing tools.
- Good understanding of emerging digital trends, technology and practices.
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to work cooperatively in a dynamic but complex and fast-moving organisation.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to meet (sometimes very tight) deadlines and manage a complex and varied workload, take initiatives, and seize opportunities.
- Good knowledge of world affairs and a demonstrable understanding of and commitment to humanitarian issues and humanitarian work, including good news sense and judgement on sensitive topics.
- Ability to think creatively, use initiative and be flexible to adapt to changing priorities.
- Commitment to the aims, values, principles and objectives of MSF.
- Experience working in diverse and cross-cultural environments.
CONDITIONS
- Position based in Lisbon, Portugal.
- Contract: 12 months, with possible extension depending on the evolution of the assigned portfolio. Candidates must meet legal conditions to be immediately hired in Portugal.
- Full time job. 40 hours per week.
- Annual gross salary (Level 7): 27.120,46 € + secondary benefits based on MSF OCBA Reward Policy.
- Starting: October 2025.
