GENERAL CONTEXT

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian action-driven organization, which offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. The MSF movement is built around six operational directorates supported by MSF’s 21 sections, 24 associations and other offices worldwide.

 

MAIN PURPOSE

To provide technical and strategic expertise in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) to improve the quality of care in OCBA missions, ensuring evidence‑based, integrated and context‑appropriate medical support aligned with MSF standards.

The role serves as a key programme support function, providing flexible technical and clinical capacity to safeguard the continuity and safety of SRH services, assess and stabilise programme activities, strengthen SRH interventions, train staff, and implement patient‑safety-oriented improvement plans.

 

JOB OVERVIEW

The SRH Advisor ensures the quality, coherence, and evolution of SRH activities across OCBA projects. The role supports mission and Cell medical staff in designing, implementing and evaluating SRH services and activities, including gynaecology‑obstetrics, maternal health, and related emergency care. The position contributes to developing guidance, strengthening clinical practices, promoting transversal collaboration, and integrating new evidence into operational strategies. The Advisor conducts field support visits, contributes to operational research, participates in Intersectional SRH working groups/platforms, promotes networking, and reinforces staff knowledge through briefings, training and technical follow‑up. The role ensures strategic alignment with OCBA priorities and supports innovation to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND MAIN TASKS

  1. Provide specialized SRH technical guidance to Cells and field teams to ensure evidence‑based and context‑adapted medical decision‑making.
  2. Strengthen the quality of sexual and reproductive care by supporting the development, implementation and evaluation of protocols, tools, and clinical standards.
  3. Monitor SRH performance indicators and field reports, providing feedback and recommendations to improve quality and consistency across missions.
  4. Conduct field visits – including emergency deployments – to assess SRH activities, train staff and develop actionable improvement plans.
  5. Collaborate with other Technical and Medical Advisors and Operational teams to ensure SRH is appropriately prioritised, safely delivered and realistically resourced within project strategies, annual plans and emergency responses.
  6. Develop SRH strategic documents, technical guidelines and packages aimed at reducing maternal morbidity and mortality.
  7. Act as a focal technical reference for patient safety and quality within SRH services, ensuring that risks related to maternal, neonatal, and reproductive care are proactively identified, mitigated, and escalated.
  8. Support Operational Research concerning sexual and reproductive health by identifying priorities, contributing to study design and participating in project follow‑up and dissemination.
  9. Coordinate with other SRH Advisor and other specialists to ensure transversal and holistic support across medical domains.
  10. Contribute to SRH Working Group discussions, representing OCBA interests and ensuring alignment with MSF-wide policies.
  11. Prepare and deliver presentations, training sessions and briefings/debriefings to reinforce SRH capacity among field and HQ staff.
  12. Provide functional support to SRH Mobile Implementer Officers (MIOs) when present, ensuring coherent and timely field assistance.
  13. Liaise with external medical experts and institutions to maintain updated knowledge on SRH innovations and integrate relevant advancements into MSF practice.

 

ROLE’S SPECIFIC ELEMENTS

  • High frequency of international travel (up to 30% of time in the field), including to insecure or emergency contexts.
  • Active follow-up of SRH-related telemedicine requests, with particular attention to patient safety, clinical appropriateness and decision-making in complex or high-risk cases.
  • Contribution to interdepartmental dossiers (HR, learning, communication, etc.) when relevant.
  • Engagement in MSF international technical platforms when assigned.
  • The scope, intensity and focus of the role may be adjusted in line with operational priorities, emergency needs, and organisational capacity, while maintaining core responsibilities related to essential SRH support, patient safety and quality.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Registered midwife or medical doctor with certified speciality degree in SRH.
  • Education and /or experience in Public Health will be a valuable asset.
  • A minimum of 2 years programme experience in different MSF projects (different contexts) or with relevant medical organization working in low-income countries and/or humanitarian settings.
  • Very good general knowledge of SRH in different domains .
  • ALSO provider training and being instructor will be a valuable asset.
  • Knowledge in computer: Excel, Word and PowerPoint programmes.
  • Training and communication skills highly appreciated.
  • Fluent in English and French. Knowledge of other languages (Spanish, Arabic, and Portuguese) is an asset.

 

CONDITIONS

  • Position based in any MSF-Spain Office: Barcelona, Sevilla, Bilbao or Madrid. With frequent field visits (up to 30% of the time). Final location will be subject to the employability of the preselected candidate (e.g., residency, work permit, etc.).
  • Permanent position.
  • Full-time position.
  • Annual gross salary: level HQ-4A 45.577,76 (divided in 12 monthly payments) + secondary benefits based on MSF OCBA Reward Policy.
  • Starting date: 4th May 2026.
